SPEAK magazine started its bi-yearly production in collaboration with the communications department. Formed as an SGA club, communications students established the magazine and worked with art department students, who handled all design needs. Writers from across the campus submitted articles, and GDDM students served as art directors alongside the magazine’s editors to produce the magazine on a yearly or bi-yearly basis, depending on SGA officers and budget. The magazine evolved over the years to build momentum, and further collaboration with the Professional Writing department helped campuswide interest expand. As the creative director for over 10 years, I served as a mentor, organized students to serve as interns to gain art direction skills, and oversaw the magazine layout. I implemented this endeavor into multiple courses as projects to give students industry experience in magazine layout and professional expectations. The magazine was professionally printed by Cayuga Press, which gave students proofing and printing experience. The magazine was dissolved in 2019 when the club as an SGA entity was not renewed.
